Cat Vomiting: When to Worry and When to Wait
Occasional vs. Concerning Vomiting
Cats vomit occasionally — hairballs, eating too fast, or minor dietary indiscretions are common causes. But certain patterns signal serious problems.
When It's Probably Fine
A single episode with normal behavior afterward, hairball expulsion, or vomiting after eating grass are typically not emergencies.
When to Call the Vet
- Vomiting more than twice in 24 hours
- Blood in vomit (red or coffee-ground appearance)
- Accompanied by diarrhea, lethargy, or refusal to eat
- Suspected toxin ingestion
- Foreign object ingestion (string, rubber bands)
- Projectile vomiting
Common Causes
Beyond hairballs: food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and intestinal parasites.
