Cat Ear Infections: Signs and Treatment

Cat Ear Infections: Signs and Treatment

Types of Ear Infections

Cat ear infections can affect the outer ear (otitis externa), middle ear (otitis media), or inner ear (otitis interna). Outer ear infections are the most common.

Common Signs

Head shaking, ear scratching, redness, swelling, dark discharge, foul odor, and pain when the ear is touched. Inner ear infections may cause head tilt and balance problems.

Causes

Ear mites are the most common cause in kittens. Adult cats may develop infections from allergies, bacterial overgrowth, yeast, or foreign objects in the ear canal.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Your vet examines the ear with an otoscope and takes a sample for microscopic analysis. Treatment may include ear cleaning solutions, antibiotic or antifungal drops, and anti-inflammatory medication.

Prevention

Check ears weekly for discharge or odor. Clean with vet-approved solutions as needed. Treat underlying allergies and keep ears dry after bathing.
