Ragdoll vs Maine Coon: Which Suits You?
Overview
Ragdolls and Maine Coons are two of the most popular large cat breeds. Both are gentle giants with affectionate personalities, but they differ in energy level, grooming needs, and temperament nuances.
Size and Appearance
Maine Coon: Males 13-18 lbs, females 8-12 lbs. Rectangular body, tufted ears, bushy tail. Comes in all colors and patterns.
Ragdoll: Males 15-20 lbs, females 10-15 lbs. Muscular body, blue eyes, pointed coloration. Goes limp when picked up (hence the name).
Personality
Maine Coons are dog-like, playful, and independent. They enjoy interactive play, can learn fetch, and often follow owners room to room. They are vocal with chirpy trills.
Ragdolls are extremely docile, relaxed, and people-oriented. They prefer lounging on laps and are less active than Maine Coons. They are quiet and gentle.
Grooming Needs
Maine Coons have a shaggy, water-resistant coat that needs brushing 2-3 times weekly. Their undercoat mats easily if neglected.
Ragdolls have a semi-long silky coat with minimal undercoat. Weekly brushing is usually sufficient, making them slightly easier to groom.
Health Considerations
Both breeds are prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and hip dysplasia. Maine Coons have a higher risk of spinal muscular atrophy. Ragdolls may develop bladder stones. Buy from health-screened breeders.
Which Is Right for You?
- Choose Maine Coon if: You want an active, playful companion with dog-like traits
