Ragdoll Cats: Temperament and Health Facts
Breed Overview
Ragdolls are large, semi-longhaired cats known for their docile temperament and striking blue eyes. They mature slowly, reaching full size at 3-4 years.
The Famous Flop
Ragdolls tend to go limp when picked up—hence the name. This extreme docility makes them wonderful lap cats but also vulnerable to rough handling.
Temperament
- Gentle and trusting with strangers
- Follow owners from room to room
- Good with children and other pets
- Rarely use claws defensively
- Indoor-only breed due to trusting nature
Health Concerns
- HCM: Affects up to 20% of Ragdolls. Breeders should screen breeding cats.
- PKD: Polycystic kidney disease occurs in some lines.
- Bladder stones: Ragdolls have higher incidence than average.
- Obesity: Low activity level makes weight management important.
Grooming
Despite their long coat, Ragdolls lack a dense undercoat. Less matting than Persians. Brush twice weekly and more during shedding season.
Color and Patterns
Three patterns: colorpoint, mitted, and bicolor. Six colors: seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, and cream. All Ragdolls are born white and develop color over 2-3 years.
