Cat Vaccination Schedule: What You Need in 2026
Core Vaccines (All Cats)
FVRCP (Feline Distemper Combo)
Protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. These are serious, potentially fatal diseases.
- Kittens: First dose at 6-8 weeks, boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks
- Adults: Booster 1 year after kitten series, then every 3 years
Rabies
Required by law in most states. Even indoor cats should be vaccinated since bats can enter homes.
- Kittens: First dose at 12-16 weeks
- Adults: Booster at 1 year, then every 1-3 years depending on vaccine type
Non-Core Vaccines (Risk-Based)
FeLV (Feline Leukemia)
Recommended for cats who go outdoors or live with FeLV-positive cats. Kittens should be tested before vaccination.
Chlamydia and Bordetella
Consider for cats in multi-cat environments like shelters or catteries where respiratory disease risk is higher.
Vaccine Safety
Modern vaccines are very safe. Mild reactions (lethargy, reduced appetite) may last 24-48 hours. Severe reactions are rare. Discuss any concerns with your veterinarian to create an appropriate vaccination plan for your cat's lifestyle.
