Cat Allergies: Food vs Environmental

Cat Allergies: Food vs Environmental

Types of Cat Allergies

Cat allergies fall into three categories: food allergies, environmental allergies (atopy), and flea allergy dermatitis. Each requires a different approach.

Food Allergies

The most common food allergens are chicken, beef, fish, and dairy. Symptoms include itchy skin, ear infections, and gastrointestinal issues. Diagnosis requires an 8-12 week elimination diet.

Environmental Allergies

Pollen, dust mites, mold, and flea saliva trigger atopic dermatitis. Symptoms are often seasonal. Skin testing or blood tests can identify specific allergens.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Some cats are hypersensitive to flea saliva. A single flea bite can cause intense itching that lasts for days. Strict flea control is the only effective treatment.

Treatment Options

Options include antihistamines, corticosteroids (short-term), cyclosporine, and allergen-specific immunotherapy. Your vet will tailor treatment based on the allergy type.
