Ocicat: Spotted & Active Breed Profile
Breed Overview
The Ocicat is a medium to large domestic cat breed with a striking spotted coat that resembles wild ocelots. Despite their exotic appearance, Ocicats have no wild DNA — they were developed from Abyssinian, Siamese, and American Shorthair crosses in the 1960s.
Physical Characteristics
- Weight: 6-15 lbs (males larger)
- Coat: Short, sleek, spotted in 12 recognized colors
- Eyes: Large, almond-shaped, all colors except blue
- Body: Athletic, muscular, medium-long legs
Personality
Ocicats are often described as dog-like. They follow their owners room to room, learn to fetch, walk on harnesses, and greet visitors at the door. Highly social, they do poorly when left alone for long periods.
Care Requirements
- Weekly brushing to maintain their sleek coat
- Daily interactive play sessions (minimum 30 minutes)
- Puzzle feeders and climbing structures for mental stimulation
- Companion cat recommended if owner works long hours
Health Considerations
Generally healthy with a lifespan of 12-18 years. Some lines carry hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). Reputable breeders screen for both conditions.
Is an Ocicat Right for You?
Best suited for active households that want an interactive, attention-seeking cat. Not ideal for people who prefer a calm lap cat or who are away from home most of the day.
