Norwegian Forest Cat: Viking Feline
Ancient Origins
Norwegian Forest Cats are a natural breed that evolved in Scandinavia's harsh climate over centuries. Vikings reportedly kept them on ships to control rodents.
Physical Characteristics
These cats have a distinctive double coat: a dense, woolly undercoat topped by long, water-resistant guard hairs. Tufted ears and paws act as natural cold-weather protection.
Temperament
Independent but affectionate. They enjoy climbing and surveying from high perches. Good with families but don't demand constant attention.
Health and Care
- Generally robust with few breed-specific health issues
- Glycogen storage disease type IV is a rare but serious genetic condition
- Their thick coat needs brushing 2-3 times weekly, daily during shedding season
- They need sturdy climbing structures to satisfy their arboreal instincts
