Maine Coon Health Screening Checklist
Breed-Specific Health Risks
Maine Coons carry genetic predispositions to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), and hip dysplasia.
Cardiac Screening
HCM affects approximately 30% of Maine Coons. Annual echocardiograms starting at age 2 can detect early heart wall thickening.
Orthopedic Evaluation
Hip dysplasia occurs in up to 25% of Maine Coons. X-rays at 1-2 years establish a baseline.
Kidney Function
Baseline blood work (BUN, creatinine, SDMA) at age 5 and annually after age 7 helps detect early kidney disease.
Dental Health
Their large mouths harbor more teeth surfaces. Professional cleanings every 1-2 years prevent painful resorptive lesions.
