Maine Coon: Complete Breed Profile (2026)
Breed Overview
Maine Coons are the largest domesticated cat breed. Males weigh 13-18 pounds, females 8-12 pounds. Some males exceed 25 pounds.
Personality
Known as gentle giants, Maine Coons are friendly, playful, and dog-like. They follow owners around, enjoy water, and many learn to play fetch.
Physical Features
- Rectangular body with substantial bone structure
- Long, flowing coat with ruff around the neck
- Tufted ears and paws for cold weather
- Bushy tail as long as the body
- All colors and patterns accepted
Grooming
Brush 2-3 times weekly. Their semi-long coat mats less than Persians but still needs regular attention. Pay extra attention to the ruff and britches.
Health Concerns
- HCM: 30% carry the gene mutation. Annual cardiac screening recommended.
- Hip dysplasia: More common than in other breeds due to large size.
- Spinal muscular atrophy: Rare but breed-specific. Genetic test available.
Living With a Maine Coon
They need space to move and climb. Sturdy cat trees rated for their weight are essential. They adapt well to families with children and other pets.
Lifespan
12-15 years with proper care. Indoor cats typically live longer.
