Havana Brown: The Chocolate Cat Breed
Breed Overview
The Havana Brown is one of the rarest cat breeds in the world, with only a few hundred registered worldwide. Named for their rich chocolate-brown coat (resembling Havana cigars, not the city), these cats were developed in England in the 1950s from Siamese and black domestic cat crosses.
Physical Characteristics
- Weight: 6-10 lbs
- Coat: Solid warm brown, short and smooth — the only accepted color
- Eyes: Vivid green, oval-shaped
- Head: Slightly longer than wide with a distinct stop at the eyes
- Whiskers: Brown, matching the coat
Personality
Havana Browns are gentle, moderately active cats that form strong bonds with their people. They are curious without being demanding, often following their owner and investigating activities without vocalizing excessively. They enjoy gentle play and lap time in equal measure.
Care Requirements
- Weekly brushing to maintain coat shine
- Moderate daily play sessions
- They adapt well to apartments and quiet homes
- Not suited for extended solitude — consider a companion cat
Health
Generally healthy with 10-15 year lifespan. Some lines are prone to upper respiratory infections and calcium oxalate stones in the urinary tract. Regular dental care is important.
Rarity and Availability
Finding a Havana Brown kitten requires patience. Waitlists can be a year or longer. Be prepared to travel for a reputable breeder, as this breed has very few active breeding programs.
