Balinese: Longhair Siamese Cat Breed
Breed Overview
The Balinese is essentially a longhaired Siamese. Despite the name, the breed has no connection to Bali — it was named after the graceful Balinese temple dancers. The longhair gene appeared naturally in Siamese litters in the early 1900s, and dedicated breeders developed it into a recognized breed by the 1960s.
Physical Characteristics
- Weight: 5-10 lbs (svelte, not heavy)
- Coat: Medium-long, silky, lies flat against the body — no undercoat
- Colors: Pointed pattern (seal, chocolate, blue, lilac, red, cream)
- Eyes: Deep vivid blue (required by breed standard)
- Tail: Long plume of fur
Personality
Balinese cats share the Siamese personality: vocal, intelligent, social, and demanding of attention. They form deep bonds with their people and can become depressed if neglected. Expect a chatty companion who will follow you everywhere and comment on everything.
Care Requirements
- Brushing 2-3 times per week to prevent tangles (less than other longhairs due to no undercoat)
- Daily interactive play — they are athletic and need outlets
- Mental stimulation through puzzle feeders and training
- Not suitable for people who want a quiet, independent cat
Health
Generally healthy with 12-20 year lifespan. Shares Siamese predispositions: amyloidosis, progressive retinal atrophy, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Reputable breeders screen for these conditions.
Balinese vs Siamese
Beyond coat length, Balinese cats tend to be slightly less vocal and somewhat more laid-back than their Siamese relatives, though they remain one of the most social cat breeds available.
