Devon Rex: The Pixie-Eared Cat Breed Profile
Breed Overview
The Devon Rex originated in England in 1950 when a curly-coated kitten named Kirlee was born in a litter of farm cats. Their distinctive features include large ears, curly coat, and elfin face.
Physical Characteristics
- Coat: Short, curly, and soft — often described as crushed velvet
- Ears: Oversized and set low on the head
- Size: Medium, muscular but elegant
- Colors: All colors and patterns accepted
Personality
Devon Rex cats are extroverted, playful, and people-oriented. They follow their owners everywhere, enjoy learning tricks, and are known for their clown-like behavior. They're often described as part monkey, part dog, part cat.
Care Requirements
Their curly coat needs minimal brushing but regular ear cleaning (they produce more ear wax than most breeds). They get cold easily — provide warm spots and consider cat sweaters in winter.
Health
Generally healthy with a lifespan of 12-15 years. Some lines carry hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — responsible breeders screen for this.
