Burmese Cat: The People-Oriented Breed Guide
Breed History
The Burmese cat originated in Burma (Myanmar), where they were kept by monks. The modern breed traces back to a cat named Wong Mau, brought to the US in 1930.
Physical Traits
- Coat: Short, satin-like, in sable (brown), champagne, blue, or platinum
- Eyes: Gold to yellow, round
- Build: Surprisingly heavy for their size — 'bricks wrapped in silk'
Personality
Burmese are among the most people-oriented cat breeds. They follow their owners from room to room, greet guests enthusiastically, and often learn to play fetch. They're social, confident, and adapt well to new environments.
Care Needs
Minimal grooming — a weekly brush keeps their short coat glossy. They need mental stimulation and companionship. Puzzle toys and interactive play keep them happy.
Health
Lifespan 12-16 years. Prone to diabetes mellitus (they tend to gain weight easily) and craniofacial defect in some lines. Monitor food intake and maintain healthy weight.
