Multi-Cat Homes: Reducing Conflict
Understanding Cat Social Dynamics
Cats are not naturally social animals. Conflict stems from competition over resources: food, litter boxes, resting spots, and your attention.
The Resource Rule: N+1
- 3 cats = 4 litter boxes in different locations
- Multiple feeding stations (not all in one spot)
- Several water sources throughout the home
- Multiple scratching posts and cat trees
Vertical Space Is Critical
Cats establish hierarchy through height. Provide cat trees, wall shelves, window perches, and tall bookshelf clearances.
Feeding Strategies
Feed in separate locations. Use microchip feeders for cats that steal from others. Puzzle feeders slow fast eaters.
Conflict vs Play
Normal play: taking turns chasing, soft paws, no hissing. True conflict: ears pinned, growling, one cat always hiding.
Reintroduction After Fights
Separate and restart introductions over 1-2 weeks with scent swapping. Never punish either cat.
When to Consider Medication
If environmental changes don't resolve conflict after 2-3 months, consult a veterinary behaviorist.
