Cat UTI: Causes, Signs, and Treatment
Common Urinary Issues in Cats
Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) encompasses several conditions including urinary tract infections, bladder stones, urethral plugs, and idiopathic cystitis. Male cats are at higher risk for life-threatening blockages.
Recognizing Symptoms
- Frequent trips to the litter box with little output
- Crying or straining while urinating
- Blood in urine
- Urinating outside the litter box
- Excessive licking of genital area
Emergency: Urethral Blockage
A blocked urethra is a life-threatening emergency, especially in male cats. If your cat strains to urinate with no output for 12+ hours, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Death can occur within 24-48 hours without treatment.
Diagnosis
Your vet will perform urinalysis, urine culture, and possibly X-rays or ultrasound to identify crystals, stones, or infection. Blood work helps assess kidney function.
Treatment Approaches
- Antibiotics for bacterial infections (2-4 week course)
- Prescription urinary diet to dissolve crystals
- Increased water intake (wet food, water fountains)
- Pain management and anti-inflammatory medication
- Catheterization for blockages (hospitalization required)
Prevention
Feed wet food, maintain hydration with multiple water sources, reduce environmental stress, and keep litter boxes clean. Annual urinalysis helps catch problems early.
