Sphynx Cat Skin Care: What Owners Must Know
Why Sphynx Skin Care Is Different
Without fur to absorb oils, Sphynx cats accumulate sebum on their skin. This causes greasiness, acne, and odor without regular bathing.
Bathing Schedule
Most Sphynx need weekly baths. Use a gentle, cat-specific shampoo. Some cats need baths every 5 days; others can go 10 days between baths.
Bathing Tips
- Use lukewarm water
- Place a rubber mat in the sink for grip
- Rinse thoroughly—shampoo residue causes irritation
- Pat dry with a warm towel
Sun Protection
Sphynx cats burn easily. Keep them out of direct sunlight during peak hours. For window sunbathers, apply pet-safe sunscreen to ears and nose.
Common Skin Issues
- Feline acne: Black specks on chin. Clean with chlorhexidine wipes.
- Yeast infections: Brown, waxy buildup in skin folds. Antifungal treatment needed.
- Ringworm: More susceptible due to lack of fur barrier.
Ear Care
Sphynx ears produce excess wax without fur to trap it. Clean weekly with vet-approved ear cleaner and cotton balls.
Temperature Regulation
Sphynx cats get cold easily. Provide warm bedding, cat sweaters in winter, and maintain indoor temperature above 70F.
