How to Bathe a Cat Safely (Without Scratches)
When Does a Cat Need a Bath?
Most cats groom themselves effectively. Baths are only necessary for long-haired breeds with matting, cats who get into something sticky or toxic, or cats with skin conditions requiring medicated shampoo.
Preparation
- Trim nails 24 hours before
- Brush thoroughly to remove loose fur and mats
- Place a rubber mat in the sink or tub for grip
- Fill with 3-4 inches of lukewarm water (not hot)
- Have cat-specific shampoo ready (never human shampoo)
The Bathing Process
Step 1: Gentle Introduction
Place your cat in the water slowly. Speak calmly and offer treats. Pour water over their body using a cup, avoiding the face and ears.
Step 2: Lather
Apply shampoo from neck to tail, massaging gently. Skip the face — use a damp washcloth instead.
Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse until water runs completely clear. Leftover shampoo residue can irritate skin and cause itching.
Drying
Wrap in a warm towel and blot dry. Most cats fear hair dryers, but if you use one, set it to cool and keep it at least 12 inches away.
