Cat Litter Box Training: Quick Tips
Setting Up for Success
Litter box training is usually straightforward since cats instinctively bury their waste. However, proper setup and placement are critical.
Choosing the Right Box
The general rule: one box per cat plus one extra. Choose a box that is 1.5 times your cat length. Covered boxes trap odors but some cats dislike them.
Litter Type
Most cats prefer unscented, fine-grain clumping litter. Avoid switching types suddenly — transition gradually by mixing old and new litter.
Placement Matters
Place boxes in quiet, accessible locations. Avoid areas near food, water, or noisy appliances. Multi-story homes need boxes on each floor.
Cleaning Schedule
Scoop daily and do a full litter change weekly. Cats are clean animals and may refuse a dirty box, leading to accidents elsewhere.
