Cat Stress: Moving House Tips
Moving Is Stressful for Cats
Cats are deeply territorial and form strong attachments to their environment. Moving disrupts everything they know — familiar scents, hiding spots, and routines. With proper preparation, you can minimize the stress and help your cat adjust quickly.
Before the Move (2-4 Weeks Ahead)
- Keep your cat's routine as normal as possible
- Start a Feliway diffuser in the room where the carrier will be
- Ensure carrier is accessible and positive (treats inside daily)
- Update microchip registration with new address
- Prepare a "cat kit" box: food, bowls, litter, toys, bedding
Moving Day Strategy
- Confine your cat to one quiet room with a "DO NOT ENTER" sign
- Keep food, water, litter, and carrier in that room
- Load the cat last — after all furniture is out
- Transport in carrier with a familiar blanket
- Never let the cat out during the move — open doors are an escape risk
At the New Home
Set Up a Safe Room First
- Choose one room and set it up before bringing the cat inside
- Place familiar items: their bed, toys, scratching post
- Set up litter box, food, and water
- Start Feliway diffuser immediately
- Keep the cat confined to this room for 3-7 days
Gradual Exploration
- After 3-7 days, open the door and let the cat explore at their own pace
- Start with one additional room at a time
- Place familiar items (scratching posts, beds) in new rooms
- Don't force exploration — some cats take weeks to venture out
Common Post-Move Issues
- Hiding — normal for 1-2 weeks; provide safe spaces
- Not eating — concerning after 24 hours; try warming food
- Litter box accidents — ensure box is in a quiet, accessible location
- Vocalization — calling for the old territory; be patient
- Escape attempts — keep windows and doors secured for the first month
Outdoor Access
Keep your cat indoors for at least 2-4 weeks after moving before allowing outdoor access. This ensures they associate the new home as their territory. When reintroducing outdoors, start with supervised sessions on a harness.
