Cat Dental Care at Home: Daily Routine Tips
Why Dental Care Matters
By age 3, over 70% of cats have some form of dental disease. Left untreated, it causes pain, tooth loss, and can lead to heart and kidney problems.
Brushing: The Gold Standard
Getting Started
Begin with finger rubbing on the gums. Use cat-specific toothpaste (human toothpaste contains fluoride, which is toxic to cats). Gradually introduce a finger brush, then a cat toothbrush.
Technique
Brush at a 45-degree angle in small circles, focusing on the outer surfaces. Aim for 30 seconds per side. Daily brushing is ideal, but even 3 times per week helps significantly.
Dental Treats and Diets
VOHC-approved dental treats reduce tartar by 15-20%. They work through mechanical abrasion. Dental kibble is larger and designed to be chewed rather than swallowed whole.
Water Additives
Enzymatic water additives reduce plaque bacteria. They're easy to use but less effective than brushing. Good as a supplement, not a replacement.
Vet Checkup Schedule
- Annual dental exam for cats under 5
- Biannual dental exams for cats over 5
- Professional cleaning when tartar is visible (yellow-brown buildup)
