Cat Water Intake Hydration Tips
Cats Are Chronic Under-Drinkers
Cats evolved as desert animals and have a low thirst drive. In the wild, they get most of their water from prey (which is 70-80% water). Domestic cats eating dry food often don't drink enough to compensate, leading to chronic mild dehydration.
Daily Water Requirements
- General guideline: 3.5-4.5 ounces per 5 pounds of body weight daily
- 10-pound cat: approximately 7-9 ounces (about 1 cup) per day
- Cats eating wet food get much of this from food
- Cats on dry food need to drink the full amount
Signs of Dehydration
- Skin tent test: Gently lift skin at shoulder — should snap back immediately
- Sunken eyes
- Dry, tacky gums
- Decreased appetite
- Lethargy
- Constipation
Practical Hydration Tips
Water Bowl Optimization
- Wide, shallow bowls — cats dislike whisker fatigue from narrow bowls
- Multiple stations — 3-4 water bowls throughout the house
- Away from food — cats prefer water separate from food in nature
- Ceramic or stainless steel — avoid plastic (absorbs odors, can cause chin acne)
- Fresh water daily — clean and refill bowls every day
Make Water More Appealing
- Cat water fountains — moving water attracts cats (they instinctively prefer running water)
- Add water to wet food — a tablespoon mixed in increases intake
- Tuna water — save water from canned tuna (low sodium) as a treat
- Ice cubes — some cats enjoy licking ice; add tuna water for extra appeal
- Broth — low-sodium chicken broth as occasional treat
Health Conditions Linked to Dehydration
- Chronic kidney disease — dehydration accelerates kidney damage
- Urinary crystals and stones — concentrated urine promotes crystal formation
- FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) — more common in dehydrated cats
- Constipation — insufficient water causes hard, difficult stools
When Hydration Becomes Urgent
Seek immediate veterinary care if your cat shows signs of severe dehydration, hasn't eaten or drunk for 24+ hours, or is vomiting repeatedly. Subcutaneous fluid therapy may be needed to restore hydration quickly.
