Feline Diabetes: Diet and Insulin Tips
Understanding Feline Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes affects approximately 1 in 200 cats, with obesity being the leading risk factor. With proper management, diabetic cats can live normal, healthy lives.
Recognizing Symptoms
Excessive thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite with weight loss, and lethargy are classic signs. Some cats develop a plantigrade stance (walking on their hocks).
Insulin Therapy
Most diabetic cats need twice-daily insulin injections. Glargine (Lantus) and ProZinc are the most commonly used insulins for cats. Your vet will teach you injection technique.
Home Monitoring
Track water intake, appetite, and litter box habits daily. Some owners learn to check blood glucose at home using a glucometer designed for pets.
Diet Management
High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets can improve blood sugar control and may even lead to diabetic remission in some cats. Consistent feeding times are essential.
