Cat Vaccination Schedule: Adult Cat Guide
Why Vaccinations Matter for Adult Cats
Many owners assume that once a cat completes their kitten vaccination series, they are protected for life. This is incorrect. Immunity wanes over time, and adult cats need regular boosters to stay protected against potentially fatal diseases.
Core Vaccines (Recommended for All Cats)
FVRCP (Feline Distemper Combo)
This combination vaccine protects against feline viral rhinotracheitis (herpesvirus), calicivirus, and panleukopenia (feline distemper). Adult cats need a booster every three years after the initial series.
Rabies
Rabies vaccination is required by law in most areas. Depending on the vaccine type, boosters are given annually or every three years. Even indoor cats should be vaccinated, as bats can enter homes.
Non-Core Vaccines (Based on Lifestyle)
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV)
Recommended for outdoor cats and cats that interact with FeLV-positive cats. Annual boosters are required.
Chlamydia felis
Recommended for cats in multi-cat environments like shelters or catteries where respiratory infections are common.
Typical Schedule
Year 1: FVRCP booster, rabies booster, FeLV if at risk. Year 2: Rabies if annual vaccine used. Year 3: FVRCP booster, rabies if three-year vaccine.
