Cat Diabetes: Symptoms and Management
Understanding Feline Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus in cats is similar to Type 2 diabetes in humans.
Warning Signs
- Increased thirst: Drinking more water
- Increased urination: Larger clumps in the litter box
- Weight loss despite appetite
- Plantigrade stance: Walking on hocks
Risk Factors
Obesity is the number one risk factor. Male, neutered, and older cats are more susceptible.
Treatment Options
Most diabetic cats need twice-daily insulin injections. Glargine is the preferred insulin. Low-carb, high-protein diet is essential.
Remission Is Possible
Unlike dogs, cats can go into diabetic remission with early treatment.
