Cat Body Condition Score Guide
What Is Body Condition Scoring?
The Body Condition Score (BCS) is a 1-9 scale that evaluates a cat's fat coverage. A score of 4-5 is ideal, below 3 is underweight, and above 6 is overweight or obese.
How to Assess BCS at Home
Visual Check (from Above)
- Ideal (4-5): Visible waist behind the ribs
- Overweight (6-7): Waist barely visible or absent
- Obese (8-9): No waist, round or oval shape
- Underweight (1-3): Severe waist, ribs visible
Rib Check (Tactile)
Run your hands along the ribcage with light pressure:
- Ideal: Ribs easily felt with a thin fat cover
- Overweight: Ribs difficult to feel through fat layer
- Underweight: Ribs prominent with no fat cover
Health Risks of Obesity
Overweight cats face higher risks of diabetes, hepatic lipidosis, arthritis, and urinary tract disease. Even 2 extra pounds on a 10-pound cat is equivalent to 20-30 extra pounds on a human.
Safe Weight Loss
- Reduce food by 10-20%, not more (rapid loss causes liver failure)
- Switch to wet food for higher protein, lower calories
- Increase play sessions to 15 minutes twice daily
- Use puzzle feeders to slow eating
- Target 1-2% body weight loss per week
When to See a Vet
Sudden weight loss (without diet change) or rapid weight gain should prompt a veterinary visit. These can signal thyroid disease, diabetes, or other conditions.
