Grooming Short-Haired Cats: What You Need
Why Groom Short-Haired Cats
Even short-haired cats benefit from regular brushing. It removes loose fur, distributes oils, and reduces hairballs.
Best Brushes
- Rubber curry brush: Gentle, removes loose fur effectively
- Slicker brush: Good for tangles behind ears
- Grooming glove: Cats tolerate it better than tools
Frequency
Brush short-haired cats once or twice weekly. Increase to daily during spring and fall shedding seasons.
Bathing
Most short-haired cats rarely need baths. Exceptions include hairless breeds, obese cats who cannot self-groom, and cats with skin conditions.
Nail Trimming
Trim nails every 2-3 weeks. Only clip the clear tip—avoid the pink quick which contains blood vessels and nerves.
Ear Cleaning
Check ears weekly. Clean with vet-approved ear solution and cotton balls. Never use cotton swabs inside the ear canal.
Building a Routine
Start grooming when your cat is relaxed. Keep sessions under 5 minutes initially. Reward with treats to create positive associations.
