Cat Grooming: Prevent Matting in Long Hair
Why Matting Is More Than Cosmetic
Fur mats pull on the skin, restrict movement, trap moisture, and can lead to infections. Long-haired breeds like Persians, Maine Coons, and Ragdolls are especially vulnerable.
Daily Brushing: The Foundation
Choose the Right Tools
You need three tools: a wide-toothed comb, a slicker brush, and a dematting tool. Avoid fine-toothed combs for general brushing.
Brush in the Right Order
Start with the wide-toothed comb, then the slicker brush in the direction of hair growth, then comb again to confirm.
Focus on Problem Areas
Behind ears, under legs, around the collar, and on the belly are the most common mat locations.
Dealing with Existing Mats
Hold fur at the base and gently work edges apart. For large or tight mats, seek a professional groomer. Never cut mats with scissors at home.
Prevention Schedule
Brush daily for long-haired cats, every other day for medium-haired. Increase during shedding season.
