How to Bathe a Cat: Stress-Free Tips

Do Cats Need Baths?

Most healthy adult cats rarely need baths. However, long-haired breeds, elderly cats, or cats that get into something sticky or toxic may need occasional bathing.

Preparation

Brush your cat thoroughly before bathing to remove loose fur and tangles. Trim nails the day before. Gather shampoo, towels, and a non-slip mat.

Bathing Steps

Fill a sink with 3-4 inches of lukewarm water. Wet your cat from the neck down, avoiding the face. Apply cat-specific shampoo and lather gently. Rinse thoroughly.

Drying

Wrap your cat in a warm towel and blot dry. Most cats dislike hair dryers. If you must use one, set it to low heat and low speed.

After the Bath

Reward your cat with treats and praise. Keep them in a warm room until fully dry. Watch for skin irritation in the days following.
