Cat Vomiting: When to See a Vet
Normal vs. Concerning Vomiting
Occasional hairball vomiting (1-2 times per month) is normal. But frequent vomiting, even if it seems like just hairballs, can signal underlying disease.
See a Vet Immediately If:
- Vomit contains blood (red or coffee-ground appearance)
- Repeated vomiting in a single day (3+ episodes)
- Vomiting with lethargy or refusal to eat for 24 hours
- Suspected ingestion of a toxic substance or foreign object
- Signs of dehydration (tacky gums, skin tenting)
Common Causes
Beyond hairballs, vomiting can indicate inflammatory bowel disease, food allergies, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, or intestinal blockage.
Home Management
For occasional vomiting: offer small amounts of bland food (boiled chicken), ensure fresh water is available, and monitor for 24 hours. If it doesn't resolve, seek veterinary care.
