Cat Ear Cleaning: When and How to Do It
Do Cats Need Ear Cleaning?
Most cats maintain clean ears naturally. However, some breeds (Scottish Folds, American Curls) and cats with allergies may need regular cleaning.
Signs Your Cat Needs Ear Cleaning
- Visible dark wax buildup
- Frequent head shaking
- Scratching at ears
- Odor from ears
Safe Cleaning Technique
Step 1: Inspect
Gently fold back the ear flap and look inside. Healthy ears are pink with minimal wax. Dark, coffee-ground-like debris may indicate ear mites — see a vet.
Step 2: Apply Cleaner
Use a vet-recommended ear cleaner. Squeeze a few drops into the ear canal. Do NOT use cotton swabs — they can push debris deeper or damage the eardrum.
Step 3: Massage and Wipe
Massage the base of the ear for 20 seconds. Let your cat shake their head, then wipe the outer ear with a cotton ball.
When to See a Vet
If you notice redness, swelling, persistent odor, or your cat resists ear handling, schedule a vet visit. These could indicate infection, mites, or polyps that need professional treatment.
