Cat Active at Night? Solutions for Better Sleep
Why Cats Are Active at Night
Cats are crepuscular — most active at dawn and dusk. This is an evolutionary adaptation for hunting. Indoor cats may shift their activity to nighttime if they sleep all day while owners are away.
Solutions
1. Adjust the Feeding Schedule
Feed the last meal of the day right before bedtime. A full belly promotes sleepiness. Use an automatic feeder for a small pre-dawn meal (4-5 AM) to prevent early morning wake-up calls.
2. Evening Play Sessions
A vigorous 15-20 minute play session before bed tires your cat out. Use wand toys or laser pointers for active play, then end with a calm session and a treat reward. This mimics the hunt-eat-groom-sleep cycle.
3. Daytime Enrichment
Keep your cat active during the day with puzzle feeders, window perches, and rotating toys. A cat who naps all day has energy to burn at night.
4. Create a Sleep Environment
Provide a comfortable, warm sleeping area away from your bedroom if night activity disrupts your sleep. A heated bed or self-warming pad encourages settling.
What NOT to Do
Don't get up and feed or play with your cat when they wake you at night — this reinforces the behavior. Earplugs and a closed bedroom door may be necessary during the adjustment period. Consistency is key; most cats adapt within 2-3 weeks.
