12 Toxic Foods You Must Never Feed Your Cat

12 Toxic Foods You Must Never Feed Your Cat

Why Cats Are More Vulnerable Than Dogs

Cats lack several liver enzymes that other animals use to detoxify compounds. Even small amounts of some foods can be fatal.

The 12 Most Dangerous Foods

1. Onions, Garlic, and Chives

All forms destroy red blood cells, causing anemia. Garlic is five times more toxic than onions. Symptoms appear 3-5 days after ingestion: pale gums, weakness, rapid breathing.

2. Chocolate

Contains theobromine and caffeine. Dark and baking chocolate most dangerous. Symptoms: vomiting, tremors, seizures, cardiac arrhythmia.

3. Grapes and Raisins

Cause acute kidney failure. Even small amounts dangerous. Symptoms within 12-24 hours: vomiting, lethargy, decreased urination.

4. Xylitol

Found in sugar-free gum and candy. Causes rapid insulin release, hypoglycemia, seizures, and liver failure.

5. Alcohol

Even tiny amounts cause intoxication, respiratory depression, and coma. Includes raw bread dough that ferments in the stomach.

6. Raw Eggs

Raw whites contain avidin, blocking biotin absorption. Also carry salmonella risk. Cooked eggs are safe.

7. Caffeine

Coffee, tea, energy drinks cause restlessness, rapid breathing, heart palpitations. No safe amount.

8. Milk and Dairy

Most adult cats are lactose intolerant. Milk causes diarrhea and vomiting. Small amounts of hard cheese usually tolerated.

9. Raw Fish

Contains thiaminase, destroying thiamine (B1). Chronic feeding causes neurological problems. Cooked fish is safe.

10. Dog Food

Lacks taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A that cats require. Long-term feeding causes heart disease and blindness.

11. Liver (in Excess)

Excessive liver causes vitamin A toxicity, bone deformities, and osteoporosis. Occasional treats only.

12. Cooked Bones

Splinter and can puncture the digestive tract. Stick to commercial treats designed for cats.
