Cat UTI: Signs, Causes, and Treatment Options
Recognizing UTI Symptoms
Urinary tract infections are common in cats, especially females and older cats. Early detection prevents complications and reduces your cat's discomfort.
Key Signs to Watch For
- Frequent trips to the litter box with little output
- Straining or crying while urinating
- Blood in urine (pink or red tinge)
- Urinating outside the litter box
- Excessive licking of the genital area
- Strong-smelling urine
Causes
UTIs in cats can be caused by bacterial infection, bladder stones, crystals in urine, or stress-related inflammation (feline idiopathic cystitis). In cats under 10, sterile inflammation is more common than bacterial infection.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Your vet will perform a urinalysis and possibly imaging. Treatment may include antibiotics (if bacterial), pain medication, dietary changes, or increased water intake strategies.
Prevention
- Ensure constant access to fresh, clean water
- Feed wet food to increase moisture intake
- Maintain clean litter boxes (scoop daily)
- Reduce household stress (routine, enrichment, pheromones)
- Consider urinary-specific diets if recommended by your vet
