Turkish Angora: Elegant, Intelligent & Ancient
Ancient Origins
The Turkish Angora originated in Ankara (formerly Angora), Turkey, and is one of the oldest natural cat breeds. They were treasured by Turkish nobility and are considered a national treasure in Turkey.
Appearance
- Coat: Medium-long, silky, with no undercoat — minimal matting
- Build: Elegant, fine-boned, but surprisingly muscular
- Eyes: Almond-shaped; blue, green, amber, or odd-eyed
- Colors: White is traditional, but all colors are now accepted
Personality
Turkish Angoras are intelligent, playful, and assertive. They often take charge of the household, opening doors and teaching themselves tricks. They're social and bond strongly with one person.
Care
Weekly brushing is usually sufficient thanks to the lack of undercoat. They're active cats who need climbing space and interactive toys. Many enjoy water and may join you in the shower.
Health
Generally healthy with a 12-18 year lifespan. White cats with blue eyes may be deaf (especially if odd-eyed on the blue side). Responsible breeders test for deafness and HCM.
