Siberian Cat: Russia's Hypoallergenic Forest Cat
Origin
Siberian cats are a natural breed from Russia, evolving over centuries in the harsh Siberian climate. They were Russia's national cat and were first exported in the 1990s.
Appearance
- Coat: Triple-layered, water-resistant, medium-long
- Build: Large, muscular, slow to mature (takes 5 years to reach full size)
- Colors: All colors accepted, including Neva Masquerade (colorpoint)
Hypoallergenic Qualities
Siberians produce less Fel d 1 protein (the main cat allergen) than most breeds. While no cat is truly hypoallergenic, many allergy sufferers report tolerating Siberians well.
Personality
Siberians are playful, intelligent, and moderately active. They enjoy climbing and need vertical space. They're affectionate without being clingy and get along well with children and other pets.
Care
Despite their thick coat, Siberians mat less than other long-haired breeds. Weekly brushing is sufficient, increasing to daily during shedding season. They're hardy cats with few health issues and a lifespan of 12-15 years.
