Ragdoll Cats: Temperament and Care Essentials
Temperament: The Puppy Cat
Ragdolls are famously docile and affectionate. They go limp when picked up (hence the name), follow their owners around, and greet visitors at the door. They're one of the most people-oriented cat breeds.
Physical Characteristics
Ragdolls are large cats — males reach 15-20 lbs, females 10-15 lbs. They have striking blue eyes, semi-long silky coats, and colorpoint patterns (darker face, ears, legs, and tail).
Grooming
Despite their luxurious coat, Ragdolls are relatively easy to groom. Their fur lacks a dense undercoat, so matting is less common. Brush 2-3 times per week with a steel comb.
Health Concerns
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): The most common heart disease in Ragdolls. DNA testing is available.
- Polycystic kidney disease (PKD): Less common but possible. Reputable breeders screen for this.
- Bladder stones: Slightly higher risk than average.
Living with a Ragdoll
Ragdolls are strictly indoor cats — they lack the survival instincts of more streetwise breeds. They're excellent with children and other pets. Expect a lifespan of 12-17 years with proper care.
