Ragdoll Cats: Temperament, Health, and Care Guide
Breed Overview
Ragdolls are large, affectionate cats known for going limp when picked up — hence their name. Males typically weigh 15-20 pounds, females 10-15 pounds. They take 3-4 years to reach full size.
Temperament
Ragdolls are often called "puppy cats" for their tendency to follow owners room to room. They're gentle, social, and adapt well to families with children and other pets. They prefer company and don't do well left alone for long periods.
Health Considerations
Common Issues
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM): The most common heart disease in Ragdolls. Annual cardiac screening is recommended.
- Polycystic kidney disease: Genetic testing can identify carriers.
- Bladder stones: More common in this breed; ensure adequate hydration.
Grooming
Despite their semi-long coat, Ragdolls have less undercoat than many long-haired breeds, making them relatively low-maintenance. Brush 2-3 times weekly, focusing on the armpits and behind the ears where mats form first.
Is a Ragdoll Right for You?
Best for: Families wanting a calm, affectionate companion. Not ideal for: People who work long hours away from home, as Ragdolls crave companionship. Lifespan: 12-17 years with proper care.
