Maine Coon Cats: Size, Diet, and Grooming Needs
The Gentle Giant
Maine Coons are the largest domestic cat breed. Males average 13-18 pounds (some reach 25+), females 8-12 pounds. They hold the record for longest domestic cat at 48.5 inches nose to tail.
Growth Timeline
Unlike most cats who reach adult size by 1 year, Maine Coons grow slowly, taking 3-5 years to reach full size. Kittens may weigh 15+ pounds by their first birthday but aren't fully mature until age 4.
Dietary Needs
High-Protein Diet
Their large frame requires quality protein. Look for foods with named meat proteins (chicken, turkey, salmon) as the first ingredient. Adult Maine Coons typically need 300-400 calories daily.
Joint Support
Due to their size, Maine Coons are prone to hip dysplasia and arthritis. Foods supplemented with glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids support joint health.
Grooming
Their thick, water-resistant coat needs brushing 3-4 times weekly. Pay special attention to the ruff (chest fur), britches (back legs), and tail. During seasonal shedding (spring/fall), daily brushing prevents painful mats.
Health Screening
- HCM (heart): Annual echocardiogram from age 3
- Hip dysplasia: X-ray at 1 year and as needed
- SMA (spinal muscular atrophy): Genetic test available
