American Curl: Unique Eared Cat Breed

Breed Overview

The American Curl is named for its distinctive ears, which curl backward in graceful arcs. The breed was discovered in 1981 in Lakewood, California, when two stray kittens with curled ears were adopted by a family. The curl trait is caused by a dominant gene.

Physical Characteristics

The Curl Gene

Kittens are born with straight ears that begin curling within 2-10 days. The final curl degree is established by 4 months. Not all kittens in a litter will have curled ears — straight-eared American Curls are healthy pets but cannot be shown.

Personality

American Curls are people-oriented, gentle cats that adapt well to various living situations. They are moderately active, enjoy interactive play, and are known for being good with children and other pets.

Health

Remarkably healthy breed with 12-18 year lifespan. Unlike Scottish Folds, the curl gene does not affect cartilage elsewhere in the body — it only affects ear cartilage. No major breed-specific health issues.

Ear Care

Curled ears can accumulate wax more than straight ears. Weekly ear checks and gentle cleaning with a vet-approved ear cleaner keep ears healthy. Never insert cotton swabs into the ear canal.
