Litter Box Placement: Where and Why
The Golden Rule
One box per cat plus one extra. A two-cat household needs three boxes placed in different locations throughout the home.
Best Locations
Quiet, low-traffic areas with easy access. Bathrooms, laundry rooms, and spare bedrooms work well. Avoid placing near loud appliances or in high-traffic hallways.
Avoid These Spots
- Near food and water bowls
- In damp basements (mold issues)
- Next to washing machines (noise frightens cats)
- Rooms that may be accidentally locked
Multi-Story Homes
Place boxes on every level. Senior cats and kittens especially need accessible options without stairs.
Box Type Matters
Most cats prefer uncovered boxes. Large boxes (1.5x body length) allow comfortable turning. Top-entry boxes reduce tracking but deter large cats.
