Litter Box Cleaning: A Weekly Routine That Works
The Importance of Litter Box Hygiene
Cats are fastidious about cleanliness. A dirty litter box leads to avoidance behaviors — your cat may start eliminating outside the box, on carpets, or in laundry baskets.
Daily Tasks (2 minutes)
- Scoop solid waste and clumps
- Check litter depth (maintain 2-3 inches)
- Wipe box edges if soiled
Weekly Deep Clean
Once per week, completely empty the litter box. Wash with mild unscented soap and warm water. Avoid bleach or ammonia-based cleaners, which can react with urine and repel cats with harsh odors.
Drying and Refilling
Ensure the box is completely dry before adding fresh litter. Moisture under the litter promotes bacterial growth and odor.
Monthly Maintenance
Replace the litter box entirely every 6-12 months. Scratches in plastic boxes harbor bacteria and retain odors that no amount of cleaning can remove.
