Kitten First Vet Visit Checklist (2026 Guide)
Why the First Vet Visit Matters
The first veterinary checkup sets the foundation for your kitten's lifelong health. Most kittens need their initial visit between 6-8 weeks of age, when core vaccinations begin.
What to Bring
- Any adoption paperwork or medical records
- A fresh stool sample for parasite testing
- A list of current foods and treats
- Notes on behavior, appetite, and litter box habits
What the Vet Will Check
A thorough physical exam covers eyes, ears, teeth, heart, lungs, and abdomen. The vet will also test for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
Vaccination Schedule
Core vaccines (FVRCP) start at 6-8 weeks with boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks. Rabies vaccine is typically given at 12-16 weeks depending on local regulations.
Questions to Ask Your Vet
- What is the recommended deworming schedule?
- When should I schedule spay/neuter surgery?
- What flea and tick prevention do you recommend?
- Should my kitten be on a specific diet?
After the Visit
Monitor your kitten for 24-48 hours post-vaccination. Mild lethargy and reduced appetite are normal. Contact your vet immediately if you notice vomiting, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing.
