Kitten Socialization: Key 2-7 Weeks

The Sensitive Period

Between 2-7 weeks of age, kittens undergo a critical socialization window. Experiences during this period shape their personality and comfort level for life.

Essential Exposures

• Human handling — Gentle handling by multiple people (different ages, genders, appearances)
• Household sounds — Vacuum, doorbell, TV, washing machine
• Other animals — Supervised exposure to friendly dogs and other cats
• Carriers and car rides — Make the carrier a positive space with treats
• Touching paws, ears, mouth — Prepares them for grooming and vet exams

After the Window

While socialization continues throughout life, the 2-7 week period has the most impact. Kittens adopted from shelters may have missed this window — be patient and use positive reinforcement to build confidence gradually.
