Litter Box Training: Kitten Guide
When to Start Litter Training
Most kittens begin litter training naturally around 3-4 weeks of age, mimicking their mother's behavior. If you've adopted an orphaned kitten, introduce a shallow litter box as soon as they're mobile.
Choosing the Right Setup
- Box size: Use a low-sided box a small kitten can climb into
- Litter type: Unscented, fine-grain clumping litter for tiny paws
- Location: Quiet, accessible area away from food bowls
- Number of boxes: One per cat plus one extra
Teaching the Basics
Place your kitten in the box after meals, naps, and play sessions. Gently scratch the litter with their front paw to demonstrate digging. Most kittens understand within a few repetitions.
Common Mistakes
Never punish accidents outside the box. Clean with enzymatic cleaner to remove scent markers that attract repeat visits.
Transitioning to Adult Boxes
Around 4-6 months, transition to a larger box. Keep the same litter type to avoid confusion.
