Kitten First Year: Care Checklist
Weeks 1-8: Early Development
Kittens need mother milk for the first 4 weeks. If orphaned, use kitten milk replacer every 2-3 hours. Socialization starts at 2 weeks with gentle handling.
Weeks 8-12: New Home Transition
Schedule the first vet visit for vaccinations, deworming, and a health check. Kitten-proof your home by securing cords, removing toxic plants, and blocking small hiding spots.
Months 3-6: Growth Spurt
Feed kitten-specific food with higher protein and fat. Start litter box training immediately. Introduce scratching posts to protect furniture.
Months 6-12: Adolescence
Discuss spaying or neutering with your vet around 5-6 months. Transition to adult food at 12 months. Continue socialization with regular handling and play.
Vaccination Schedule
Core vaccines (FVRCP) at 6-8 weeks, then boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks. Rabies vaccine at 12-16 weeks.
