Introducing a New Cat: Step-by-Step
Preparing Your Home
Before bringing a new cat home, set up a safe room with food, water, litter box, scratching post, and hiding spots. This gives your new cat a secure base.
The First 24 Hours
Keep the new cat in the safe room. Let them explore at their own pace. Spend quiet time in the room but do not force interaction.
Scent Exchange
If you have existing cats, swap bedding between rooms so they can get used to each other scent. This is the most important step for multi-cat homes.
Visual Introduction
After 3-5 days, allow cats to see each other through a baby gate or cracked door. Watch for hissing, which is normal, versus aggressive behavior.
Supervised Meetings
Once both cats seem calm, allow short supervised meetings. Keep sessions brief and positive, with treats and play. Full integration typically takes 2-4 weeks.
