Cat Scratching Posts: How to Choose
Why Cats Scratch
Scratching is natural behavior. Cats scratch to mark territory, stretch muscles, shed old claw layers, and express emotions. Providing proper scratching outlets prevents furniture damage.
Material Preferences
Sisal rope is the most popular material. Corrugated cardboard and carpet are also options. Observe what your cat prefers — some like vertical surfaces, others horizontal.
Size and Stability
The post must be tall enough for full-body stretching (at least 30 inches) and stable enough not to wobble. A wobbly post will be abandoned.
Placement Strategy
Place scratching posts near sleeping areas and furniture your cat targets. Cats often scratch after waking up. Multiple posts in different rooms work best.
Training Tips
Sprinkle catnip on the post, dangle toys nearby, and reward scratching with treats. Never punish scratching — redirect to the post instead.
