Cat Litter Box: Ideal Cleaning Schedule

Cat Litter Box: Ideal Cleaning Schedule

Why a Cleaning Schedule Matters

Cats are fastidious creatures. A dirty litter box can lead to avoidance, stress, and even urinary tract infections. Establishing a consistent cleaning routine is one of the most important things you can do for your cat's wellbeing.

Daily: Scoop at Least Once

Scoop solid waste and clumps every day — ideally twice. This keeps odor down and lets you monitor your cat's output for health changes.

Weekly: Full Litter Change

For clumping litter, replace the entire box every 7 days. Non-clumping litter may need changing every 2-3 days. Dump old litter, wash the box with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and refill with 2-3 inches of fresh litter.

Monthly: Deep Clean the Box

Once a month, scrub the box with diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 30 parts water). Rinse until no bleach smell remains.

Pro Tips

Use unscented litter. Place the box in a quiet, accessible spot. The general rule is one box per cat plus one extra.
