Cat Carrier Training: Stress-Free Vet Visits
Why Carrier Training Matters
Most cats associate carriers with stressful vet visits. By changing that association, you can transform vet trips from traumatic to tolerable.
The 2-Week Training Plan
Week 1: Make It Home
Leave the carrier open in your cat's favorite room. Place soft bedding, treats, and catnip inside. Let your cat explore at their own pace.
Week 2: Short Trips
Once your cat enters willingly, close the door for 30 seconds, then open it. Gradually increase to carrying them around the house, then short car rides.
Tips for Success
- Use Feliway spray 15 minutes before loading
- Cover the carrier with a towel during transport
- Never force your cat in — patience pays off
- Feed meals inside the carrier to build positive associations
Emergency Loading
If you need to load an untrained cat quickly, remove the top half of the carrier, place your cat inside, and replace the top. This avoids the struggle of pushing them through a small door.
